Implementation of cyclic olefin copolymer-based microwave circuit and the performance comparison

The fabrication process of an advanced transparent cyclic olefin copolymer (COC)-based laminate is introduced, along with the laser cutting technology for circuit pattern. Then, a three-way Gysel divider with an equal power-dividing ratio is reviewed, designed and measured, based on the proposed COC-based laminate. The measured results are compared to those from a similar three-way Gysel divider based on traditional RT/duroid 5880 laminate, from which we can see that COC-based laminate has the advantage of lower loss, with other advantages such as low cost, easy realization, high-precision, and even the transparency. This laminate can be an excellent candidate for a substrate at microwave or millimeter-wave circuits.
