Application of deep eutectic solvents (DESs) as trace level drug extractants and drug solubility enhancers: State-of-the-art, prospects and challenges

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have garnered substantial interest from the scientific community in recent years due to their widely recognized potential as green alternatives to conventional solvents. On the other hand, to improve bioavailability of drugs and determination of trace level drugs are still challenging. In this context, numerous DESs have been evaluated as enhancers of drug solubility and preconcentration solvents for trace level pharmaceuticals in a variety of samples. In this review, the related studies reported between 2016 and 2021 have been systematically summarized and critically reviewed. Additionally, the mechanisms by which DESs promote drug solubility are demonstrated and explored in detail. Finally, the prospects and problems of using DESs as drug solubility enhancers and trace level drug extractants are reviewed and proposed thoroughly.
