摘要

The high energy density of liquid fuels creates a great opportunity to develop combustion based micro-power generation systems to meet increasing demands for portable power devices, micro unmanned aerial vehicles, micro-satellite thrusters and micro chemical reactors. Electrospray technology is a method to realize fuel atomization by using electric stress to overcome the surface tension of liquid. The advantage of this technology is that the droplet size can be extremely fine, reaching the micron level, and the droplet size and distribution can be controlled by changing the voltage. Due to the advantages of this technology, a breakthrough has been made in the small-scale combustion system. This work comprehensively reviews the fundamental understanding and the advantages of electrospray combustion technology. In the regime of electrospray, this review reported the combustion characteristics of different liquid fuels with various properties, and the role of catalyst on the combustion enhancement. Correspondingly, the performances of the small-scale combustors based on the above are further discussed. The fundamental researches including the instability of spray, breakup mechanism of charged droplets, scaling law and catalytic combustion, etc., are introduced in detail. Finally, this review concludes its findings and put forward prospects for future research directions.
