Enhanced UV-shielding performance of poly(lactic acid) composite with POSS-modified bamboo powder

Biodegradable poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is considered a potential alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics due to its biodegradable and biocompatible nature. However, the poor UV shielding ability of PLA limits its application in the packaging field. In this work, to improve the UV shielding performance of PLA, without weakening its biomass nature, Glycidyl POSS modified bamboo powder (POSS-BP) is prepared as a new UV shielding agent. The study demonstrates that when POSS-BP is 7 wt%, POSS-BP/PLA composite can block 76.42% UVA and 86.44% UVB, and still maintain high visible light transmittance. In addition, the introduction of POSS-BP can significantly improve the crystallization properties of PLA. The dynamic rheological results also indicate that POSS-BP reduced the complex viscosity and improved the processing performance of PLA composites. In summary, this work provides a new strategy for the preparation of biodegradable UV shielding composites, which is expected to expand the application of PLA in the packaging field.
