Based on the existing provisions of laws and regulations that can be referenced by NPPs in China on vertical ground motion rules, four kinds of vertical ground motion selection results could be got, and then the 4 different vertical seismic synthetic ground motion response spectra could be used to calculate the seismic response of the NPPs structure under the different vertical ground motions, including the peak acceleration and the floor response spectrum of each node.The calculation results showed that in the process of the seismic design of NPPs, the value of vertical acceleration took 2/3 and horizontal peak acceleration in all frequency bands which would tend to be not conservative.It was suggested that in the NPPs site seismic safety evaluation and seismic design, the seismic characteristics of the actual site should be considered in selection of the vertical ground motion, or according to the methods recommended in the ASCE4-98.
