Summary

A highly vibrant living space is the cornerstone of sustainable urban development, profoundly influencing a city's spatial configuration. Community-level Small-Scale Commerce stands as a vital indicator, reflecting the overall vitality of urban spaces. This research centers on the dynamic living areas of the Macao Peninsula, specifically examining active centers during the period from 2014 to 2020. It focuses on four key districts: the Ruins of St. Paul, Inner Harbor, Lower Ring Region, and Horta e Costa Region, utilizing space syntax analysis to conduct a comprehensive quantitative investigation. Through a resident-centric lens, this study integrates existing traffic networks to unravel the structural intricacies governing urban transportation optimization. Simultaneously, it explores the spatial arrangements of internal streets within these districts and delves into the distribution patterns of commercial enterprises. The research also investigates the underlying principles dictating local-level network dynamics. The outcome is a wealth of insights, offering invaluable reference points and index parameters to enhance daily life spaces within Macao's historic districts. Furthermore, it seeks to invigorate street vitality. By comprehensively understanding the spatial dynamics and connectivity of these urban spaces, this study contributes to the discourse surrounding urban development. It addresses a significant gap in the literature by unraveling the intricate interplay between spatial parameters, Small-Scale Commerce, and urban vitality. These findings provide a fresh perspective on optimizing urban spaces and serve as a practical guide for urban planners and policymakers. As we look to the future, potential research avenues could explore the nuanced dynamics of historic districts in diverse cultural and geographical contexts. Analyzing the impact of digital technologies, sustainability considerations, and evolving urban lifestyles on these spaces would provide a comprehensive understanding of urban development in the twenty-first century.
