Ionic Liquid/Functionalized Graphene Oxide as a Nano Additive for Corrosion Protection and Lubrication

With water-based lubricants, the quest for corrosion resistance and excellent lubricity is the constant goal. Herein, the charge properties of ionic liquids (ILs) and their adsorption properties with regard to metals were used to effectively modulate the lubrication performance and improve graphene oxide (GO) properties. Two nanomaterials (Ch-Trp/GO and Ch-Met/GO) were designed and prepared by synthesizing two ILs via simple acid-base neutralization reactions with choline (Ch) and amino acids (AA) and reacting them with GO. Additives can stably disperse in water and adsorb on metal surfaces to form chemisorbed films to reduce corrosion. When added to water mixed with polyethylene glycol (PEG), both materials exhibited improved friction-reducing performance. The results of the mechanism analysis indicate that the additives effectively adsorbed on the metal surface and formed a chemisorbed film. ILs not only help smooth the GO surface but also contribute to the friction reaction, thus exhibiting excellent lubrication properties.
