摘要
This paper proposed an approach to predict particle breakage and gradation evolution for carbonate sands, based on single-particle compression and confined bulk compression tests. Two key concepts, i.e. 'Breakage ratio' and 'Evolution Distribution Matrix' were developed in this study, to address two central questions (1) what is the portion of the original particles that will break under different level of external loading, and (2) what are the rel-ative proportions of new particles resulted from the larger broken particles. The calculation parameters in this prediction approach can be calibrated through the single-particle compression and uniformly-graded sample bulk compression tests conducted in this study. Compression tests by using non-uniformly graded samples were further carried out and the prediction approach was used to compare the test results. The good agreement demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed prediction approach.
